BAPTISM
The purpose, meaning and significance of baptism
Spiritual things in the water.
Water Baptism is a ceremony in which a Christian is immersed in water before the church to publicly symbolize their belief in Christ. This act signifies a believer’s faith in, and commitment to the LORD Jesus Christ.
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:13-17)
Baptism symbolizes new birth and new beginnings.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Baptism pictures our identification and union with Jesus in His sacrificial death, burial, and resurrection.
Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3-4)
Baptism connects us to the collective “Body of Christ”.
For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.(1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
Baptism confirms our position “in Jesus Christ” and affirms the blessings of the Father on His children.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:19-20)
